Intro

There’s no need to fear Ogres in Betsoft’s new slot machine Ogre Empire – it is another fantasy story about kings, queens, jokers and one ogre whose magical enchantment is tough to resist. The 5-reel 3D slot benefits from 25 paying lines and makes a fine edition to the already world-famous Betsoft’s Slots3™ series. As you load Ogre Empire, you’ll join the townspeople of an imaginary kingdom and try to solve the confusion caused by an ogre. The story fits an interesting fantasy novel, but does it suit a video slot? Sure! With an addition of two game modes alternating during gameplay, Ogre Empire becomes an engaging gaming machine with flattering payouts. The design is impressive at the least; you can see the quirky green animated ogre among the humble houses on the left side of the reels. His size may be intimidating but his benevolent eyes beg to differ.

Game Symbols

The symbols of Ogre Empire are somewhat subject to the game’s configuration, and there are different symbols on the reels depending on the active mode. However, there is an assortment of standard game icons, namely A, K, J, and Q, a mushroom, a stack of gold coins and a club which can only be related to the ogre. Another set of four high valued symbols will appear in both modes: the ogre, the Wild, the diamond and a plate filled with all sorts of jewels and gems.

Now, when the game is played in Day Mode you can see the Sun Bloom Wild flower on the reels, whereas in the Night Mode you’ll encounter the Bight Bloom Wild flower as well as the King, the Queen and the Joker replacing the K, Q and A icons. The Scatters were carefully chosen, the Sun and the Moon, each in charge of triggering its respective game mode.

Gameplay

Standard controls are featured on the dashboard below the reels. Sound settings and the turbo play option are located on the far left, whereas the Double Up and Autoplay buttons are right beside them. Above, the line bet adjustments can be made by clicking on the two arrows. The big, green Spin button is on the right as well as the paytable and game rules.

Both the Day Mode and the Night Mode are explained in the game’s Detailed Rules section. The Day Mode begins as soon as the Sun symbol appears in all its glory; therefore, the Sun symbol can only appear in Night Mode and it will pay 4x the stake. The ogre is active during Day Mode. When the Moon symbol appears, Night Mode begins as well as slumber time for the ogre. The townsfolk appear and the symbols change. The Moon symbols carries a 6c the total stake payout.

Bonus Features

The Day/Night cycle can be seen as an innovative feature, if not as a bonus. It’s innovative and adds depth to the gameplay. During the day, the ogre is awake and you can feel his presence when he smashes the stone playing car symbols with his club. The smashed symbols will make way for more high value symbols to take their place and more winning opportunities will arise. Apart from the Daytime Ogre Smash feature, the Day Mode offers a special Wild feature – the Sun Blossom Wild blossoms and grows, spreading on nearby symbols and turning them into Wilds as well.

During nighttime, the mystical Night Bloom Wild will also demonstrate Wild activity; with its glowing spores the flower will turn up to 3 random symbols into Wilds. The Joker wakes up and becomes Wild with a 2x multiplier. Additionally, there is an optional Double Up game after every winning spin.

Payouts

Ogre Empire can be played with the coin value range from 0.01 to 1. The paylines are fixed and the payouts become bigger in nighttime, as the ogre is asleep. The top paying symbol becomes the king, offering 40 times the bet for five of a kind. The maximum payout is worth 8,000 the bet and it’s reserved for a specific lineup of Kings and Jokers across the entire reel grid. The RTP is 95.22%, as announced by the developer.

Verdict

The Ogre Smash feature is awesome and the two game modes are innovative and quite refreshing. Betsoft continues to improve its Slots3™ series with new additions, and with Ogre Empire another step has been taken towards bigger progress. The graphics are crisp, the music is joyful and the features are slick. Some players may find it underwhelming that there are no free spins, but the winning opportunities don’t suffer for it.
