Slot Theme

A new entry to the online gaming library, brought by Playtech, is another one inspired by a DC Comics character. Superman: The Movie is a 100 payline video slot based on the 1978 film featuring Christopher Reeve as the superhero, Margot Kidder as the fearless journalist, and Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor. As the nerdy reporter battles to defeat the criminal genius, win Lois and save the world, you’ll be enjoying an action-packed gameplay to the sounds of the original Superman theme.

Game Symbols

Five reels hanging up in space, with the planet Earth shining in the background, deliver well-known theme-related symbols. Superman himself is the highest paying one, joined on the reels by the love of his life, the charming Lois Lane, his alter ego Clark Kent, and his arch enemy Lex Luthor. High value icons also include Daily Planet logo and a Kryptonite pendant, while J to Ace playing card symbols deliver smaller awards. Wild Superman logo will substitute for any of them, though it can’t take place of Free Games and Bonus symbols.

Gameplay

If you have watched and liked any of the Superman movies (and who hasn’t?), you might feel a bit nostalgic when hearing the original tune from the film. But don’t start reminiscing now as there are a few decisions to be taken before you can start spinning. While paylines are fixed at 100 at each round, you can select your total bet in the range of €0.60 to €80. Autoplay button will allow you to rest your hands for up to 99 spins or until a feature is triggered, while turning on Turbo mode speeds things up, though it might make you miss some animations and sounds.

Bonus Features

Bonus symbol on reels 2, 3 and 4 activates Crystal Bonus Round and takes you to a new game scene, where picking among 14 crystals offered, you’ll be collecting prizes and symbols. Some crystals will award cash prizes, and each one that reveals a x2 or x5 Multiplier, multiplies the value won until that point in the bonus game. Revealing a Superman logo symbol disables one of the Collect icons and destroys one of the crystals, while the Restart symbol causes all picked crystals to re-build and re-shuffle. Try to stay away from the green crystal which will end the bonus round.

Free Games icon on reels 1, 3 and 5 triggers Save the Day Free Games. To start you off, you’ll get 10 spins with each Wild symbol remaining locked for the duration of the feature. Once your free spins are up, Superman will, tortured with grief over the demise of lovely Lois, turn back time and award additional 10 free games with those same Wilds locked in place.

Same as the other slots from the series, Superman: The Movie features multi-level progressive DC Superheroes Jackpot which can be triggered randomly on any of the spins. It can activate regardless of how much you’re betting, and once it does, you’re guaranteed to collect. However, the bigger your stake, the higher are the chance of it happening. By selecting fields in a hexagonal shape, you’ll be revealing 4 different jackpot symbols. Collect as many as needed and you’ll win one of the four progressive jackpots – Mini, Minor, Major or Grand.

Payouts

Superman comes with an average RTP of 95.01%. Top paying symbol awards 500x your line bet for five on a payline, which means that if you were betting max, your balance would grow by €40,000. While nobody is likely to frown when winning this amount, it’s possible to collect more with the help of free games with locked wilds, as well as by triggering one of the higher value jackpots. The jackpots never reset to zero, so the minimum you’ll collect is €100, €1,000, €10,000 or €100,000 for Mini, Minor, Major and Grand respectively.

Verdict

There are already quite a few of Superman-inspired slots out there, so you’re hardly likely to get excited based on the theme alone. What might arouse your interest is the possibility to win decent amounts through the base game itself, and more than decent via the re-triggerable and lucrative free games feature and progressive jackpots. Overall, it’s a good-looking game which might prove to be worth your time financially, and if you liked the other DC Comics slots from the same developer, chances are you’ll enjoy this one too.
